Rooted in Racine: October 23-24

Its an exciting time to be a Wisconsinite this weekend. Not only are there family friendly events happening based in the fall festivities and Halloween, but also, the Milwaukee Brewers are in the World Series. Talk about thrills!

Brewers Watch Party

In Downtown Racine, kick off the weekend by watching the Milwaukee Brewers on the big screen. This is a once in a lifetime experience for the Brewers and Brewer fans as they haven’t been to a World Series in 44 years.

The City of Racine in conjunction with the Downtown Racine Corporation will have the game playing at 7 p.m. on two 20 foot screens on Monument Square.

This event is open to anyone and while I have never been to the event before, I suspect that it is fairly accessible. Here’s what I can tell you about Monument Square events: the events take place on flat as well as paved ground, there are no bathrooms (unless there are porta potties nearby) designated. If you have Gastrointestinal issues, consider how bathroom accessibility plays a role in your life.

Food vendors will be onsite. People are welcome to order food and drinks from food trucks. If you have food allergies, celiac, or GI issues, it may be best to bring your own food and drinks.

The city stated that there will be some seating available, but people are welcome to bring their own chairs. The weather in Wisconsin is unpredictable. If you are sensitive to weather changes, dress in layers and be prepared.

Win or lose, this will be a fun night with the community. Note that if you are sensitive to sound, cheering can get loud and I would predict two large TVs put off loud sounds too.

Free Family Fall Fest

Get spooky at RAM on October 24 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for their Free Family Fall Festival.

Kids in Racine County can get crafty and get their spooky on at the Racine Art Museum’s location at Charles A. Wustum Museum of Fine Arts, 2519 Northwestern Ave.

The art museum will offer a not so spooky event for people of all ages. Community members can come in costume if they’d like. If interested, attendees are welcome to participate in the
the annual costume parade. Folks can pick out a pumpkin from the on site pumpkin patch. There will be a scavenger hunt, as well as art projects to complete. People are welcome to explore the indoor galleries too.

Accessibility note: The Wustum location within RAM is not fully accessible inside. You can access one floor. However, the festival is outdoors. Portions of the grounds are paved and others are grass areas. For full details about the accessibility at both of their locations, visit their website.

Boo at the Zoo

All month long, the Racine Zoo has been in the spirit of Halloween. They have hosted their Jack-O-Lantern lights at night. When the animals are fast asleep, festive lights come alive in a spooky fashion. View details about that event here.

If the lights aren’t your gig or if you are looking for another reason to visit the zoo this time of year, gather your ghosts and head to the Racine Zoo on October 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for an assortment of Halloween activities.

According to the Racine Zoo here’s what they have available:

  • Trick-or-Treat “Knock-Knock” Doors
  • Spooky cookie decorating (while supplies lasts)
  • Halloween craft
  • Pumpkin decorating (while supplies lasts)
  • Find and meet our special creepy, crawly animal ambassadors
  • Bounce houses
  • Food and drinks available for purchase

The price of this event is the price of zoo admission. Find those fees online. (link will also provide details about Boo at the Zoo)

Accessibility note: The Racine Zoo works to be accessible. They have bathrooms onsite. They have changing stations in the bathrooms for children. While this event may be loud due to influx of children and things to do, it is an outdoor event. The zoo is paved making it a great event for wheelchair users. As a Racine Zoo member myself, the staff is super understanding and works to help whenever a matter is brought to their attention.

Enjoy these events happening locally!
