Edible weeds, and other things realized while pandemiced

by Kelsey Marie Harris

I’ve recently learned that some weeds are edible, medicinal even. Dandelion is beneficial from the flower to the root. Purslane grows in abundance, and has the most Omega 3 fatty acids of all leafy greens. Lambsquarters, a type of wild spinach, is an excellent source of B vitamins.

Nothing is truly owned. We came, we saw.  We conquer, we neglect. We obsess over possession as if it’s a basic need. We mow and bathe our lawn in chemicals for an imaginary pat on the ass from our neighbors, then spend the day staring at our useless grass patch feeling like patriots.

Growing up near the woods, we had lots of wild things growing. My dad would tell us what was poisonous and what was safe to eat. HOW DID HE KNOW?! How do you just know something like that? Or maybe he was just guessing.

There is still so much I don’t know, but I’ve been doing so much research because I find it so fascinating. It’s funny, before everything looked the same, but now it all looks so different! It feels good to be able to be like “I know that one!”
