Make Trick or Treating Inclusive

Trick or Treating can be made more inclusive to meet the needs of those with disabilities, chronic conditions, or other needs by considering the following:

  • to meet the needs of those with food allergies or dietary restrictions, if you are handing out candy, have a non-food treat option
    • Alternative options can include toy cars, stickers, handheld games, whistles, rings
  • if offering alternative treat option, ensure the treats are in a bowl away from common allergens
  • when handing out candy, understand that not all children or people trick or treating may have the ability to say “Trick or Treat” or have the ability to express manners
  • If you are a person going door to door, be cautious and aware if anyone Trick or Treating with you has any food allergies to nuts or other common allergens that are commonly found in candy
  • ensure you have a clear path designated for those who are Trick or Treating to meet the needs of all mobility abilities
  • welcome all ages
  • be mindful that not all who are Trick or Treating may have a costume on
    • may be due to a financial reason
    • may be due to sensory reasons
  • limit use of strobe lights to meet the needs of those with light sensitivities

Not everyone experiences Halloween the same way and not everyone’s needs are visible or the same. This Halloween the most helpful tip to follow is to listen and to be present.
