More than a Feeling: Writing and Publishing Perzines

UPDATE (12/17/21): The live workshop has been canceled, because it’s tomorrow but no one has registered yet. I will instead be recording a video presenting the information I would have presented in the workshop and posting it online (for free). My apologies if anyone was actually planning to attend, but as no one has registered I had to make the call now. I will update this page with the link to the video once it is available.

Hey, it’s me, Jessie Lynn McMains, your resident zinester. I’ve been writing zines for almost 28 years now, and for at least 24 of those years, they’ve mostly been perzines. (What’s a zine? What’s a perzine? Check out the post I wrote for International Zine Month.) And now I’m here to teach you how to turn your life into a story and publish it in zine form.

More Than a Feeling (Writing and Publishing Perzines)

Date: December 18, 2021

Time: 4-6:30 p.m. (Central Time)

Location: Online

Open to: anyone ages 15+ (participants from Racine and Kenosha counties will be given precedence)

Facebook Event Page

About: In this online workshop, I will be providing prompts and ideas for turning stories from your life into zine-worthy writing, sharing some relevant examples from my favorite perzines (and my own), and showing you how to put your finished piece(s) into zine form. There will be time to write and create, as well as time for sharing your work and asking questions.

The class is limited to 20 participants. Participants from Racine and Kenosha counties will be given precedence, but you are welcome to sign up no matter where you live. You will then be put on a wait list and added to the class on a first-come first-serve basis. You will be notified by December 15th if you have a spot or not. All participants will receive more information (including the Zoom link) in the days leading up to the workshop.

Bring your juiciest, weirdest, silliest, saddest thoughts and memories, your favorite writing utensils, and your best glue sticks and scissors and ephemera, and let’s get writing and (self) publishing!

Note: No one will be limited in what they can discuss/write about, but hate speech and the like will not be tolerated.

Note to participants under 18 and their parents/guardians: Participants will not be limited in the sharing of their work, no matter what it’s about or how it’s expressed. (Within reason—see above.) Because of this, there may be sensitive topics discussed or adult language used.
