Musicality

The Mirriam-Webster site lists musicality as,

“the quality or state of being musical : melodiousness.”

My mentor, Marshall T. Smith, leaned into musicality in poetry. I tend to agree.

Not every poem has an uplifting beat. The rhythm within builds on several methods including assonance, consonance, pacing, and syllable counts. Perhaps it is better to show than tell. I believe this new piece I’ve written includes some of those requirements.

Stop in at Vintage & Modern Books this Tuesday (12:30 to 2:30 pm) and bring me your musicality.

Musical Words

There are words that fit,

and words that sit,

and words the flit about your head.

They bring in thoughts,

dredge up loss,

or take pot shots at the dead.

Sometimes they dance

a particular parlance,

as you advance knowledge in your head.

Other bits of jargon

events with friends harken

Brightening or darkening our days end.

Outlines of  abstraction,

fog-filled but premonition,

yet steady production moving ahead.

But you, my friend,

Use words to transcend, Add love to what is said, apply to others to uplift.
